Regardless of how it panned out, Ange Postecoglou will always be remembered by the Tottenham Hotspur faithful as the man who ended the club’s trophy drought.
In what turned out to be his last game as the club’s manager, he spearheaded them to the UEFA Europa League crown last summer, beating Manchester United 1-0 in the final to earn the club their first trophy in 17 years.
Postecoglou had a short stint with Nottingham Forest after his Tottenham sacking and is currently without a job as he plots his next move.
In the meantime, though, he was a recent guest at The Overlap, touching upon a wide-range of topics from his stint with the North London outfit.
And his quotes about Cristian Romero – albeit unsurprising – are further proof that the Tottenham captain is quite the character who isnt everyone’s cup of tea.
Big Ange says Tottenham squad were ‘scared’ of Romero
The 2025-26 campaign hasn’t gone as planned for Romero. The Argentine has been vocal about the club’s lack of ambition on social media, while his own form hasn’t been anywhere close to his best.
Romero was sent off in the 2-0 defeat to Manchester United, which turned out to be his last appearance under Thomas Frank, who was sacked a week later after Spurs were beaten 2-1 by Newcastle United.

The mercurial defender wears his heart on his sleeve, but sometimes, he tends to make rash decisions on the pitch, which has divided opinion among fans and pundits.
Postecoglou, however, feels Romero is the kind of character he’d relish working with, adding that he is a serial winner who isn’t afraid of anything
“Does he cross the line? Yeah,” said Postecoglou on The Overlap.
“He’d cross the line at training sometimes, and the coaches go ‘oh, you know’ and I’d go ‘well, you’ve got to tell him, I’m not telling him.’
“You need that mentality in a group. Now, how do you control that? You need to harness that.”
“I love him. He plays on the edge, he’d scare people in training, and I love the way he talks. Would you rather have Roy [Keane] in your team or against you?
“We would never have run that far without Romero. Kick-off was about to happen and he was taking our team into Manchester United’s half for the huddle, because our supporters were down that end.
“He’s not scared of anything. He’s a winner. I love winners.”
Romero’s suspension and what the future holds for him
Romero’s straight red card for a rash challenge on Casemiro meant he would receive a three-match ban. However, having already been sent off in the defeat to Liverpool in December, an additional one-game suspension kicked in.
Having served just one of those games, he is set to miss the game against Arsenal (H), Fulham (A) and Crystal Palace (H) as Igor Tudor aims to stamp his authority.
After that run, he is expected to be drafted straight into the starting XI, with Tottenham currently languishing in 16th place in the Premier League standings.
Romero has been linked with a move to Atletico Madrid as speculation surrounding his Tottenham future continues to dominate the back pages.
In the summer, all parties are expected to sit down and have a conversation about his future.
In order to do so, Spurs will need clarity on who their permanent manager is going to be, with a handful of names being considered at this point in time.
