Tottenham should let Eric Dier leave this summer

Eric Dier’s football career peaked when he squeezed a penalty past David Ospina – to send England through to the quarter-finals of the World Cup.

Ever since then his career has fallen off a cliff – with a dramatic loss of form last season and a lot of Spurs fans turning against the former Sporting Lisbon man.

Dier was once considered one of the brightest prospects in European football, but now he is only seen as a decent Premier League player – a backup centre-back and midfielder.

The 25-year-old is very versatile – and perhaps it is this versatility that has stagnated his career – moving from position to position and not finding the time to perfect one role in the team.

This can be seen in the number of games Dier has played at centre-back and in midfield.

At the moment Dier is Tottenham’s fifth choice centre-back and is behind Tanguy Ndombele, Moussa Sissoko and Harry Winks for a place in midfield.

It, therefore, seems unlikely that Dier will get much game time this year – last season he only made 28 appearances for Spurs compared with 182 in the four years prior.

Tottenham are still looking to add players to Mauricio Pochettino’s squad, but they could do without Dier – the only problem they will have is finding any takers for a player who is woefully out-of-form and looks slow and sluggish on the ball.

Back in 2017 Manchester United supposedly offered £50m for Dier but Spurs turned it down – now they will be looking to get around £36m for him.

Spurs have just four days left to try and offload Dier – if they can their squad will be much better off without him.
