Tottenham silenced their doubters last night with a massive win and clean sheet in their first leg clash against Manchester City. Both Hugo Lloris’ penalty save and Heung-Min Son’s late goal saw Spurs take the advantage into the away leg in Manchester next week. Their match at the Etihad will by no means be easy but Spur have given themselves a great chance to progress into their first Champions League semi-final.
The match was filled with VAR controversy as well as a nasty looking injury to Harry Kane. Spurs fans will know well that Kane has been plagued by an ankle injury this season and looks as though he could miss the rest of the season. However, just as he had done previously in the season, Heung-Min Son stepped up to the plate for his team and fired Spurs 1-0 up with a low drive underneath Ederson.
Here’s how we rated the players performances:
Hugo Lloris - 8
Lloris had saved his last two penalties before Sergio Aguero stepped up to the spot last night. He didn’t disappoint this time either as he denied the Argentine.
Kieren Trippier - 7
Trippier was given the difficult task of keeping Raheem Sterling at bay on the right flank and did so fairly well. He played his part in keeping a vital clean sheet for Spurs.
Toby Alderweireld - 8
Alderweireld showed just how good he can be with a very solid performance. He never allowed Aguero or David Silva an inch of space and helped turn defence to attack quickly for Spurs.
Jan Vertoghen - 7
Despite some weak claims of encroachment on Aguero’s penalty, Vertonghen didn’t put a foot wrong. Confident both on and off the ball.
Danny Rose - 7
Rose continued his fine run of form and linked with both Alli and Eriksen well when attacking up the left hand side.
Moussa Sissoko - 7
Sissoko showed desire to retrieve the ball at every opportunity as well as to get forward when in possession. A good day at the office for the Frenchman.
Harry Winks - 8
Winks was excellent in midfield; by both breaking down City’s play and finding Eriksen in pockets of space he once again performed on Europe’s biggest stage.
Heung-Min Son - 8
Son was a nuisance all bight with runs off the shoulder of Delph and Laporte. His energy and constant desire around the box paid off with his goal.
Dele Alli - 7
Alli enjoyed playing in a more advanced role against City and he impressed in doing so. His connection with Eriksen and Kane has often paid dividends for Spurs and caused more problems last night.
Christian Eriksen - 8
Eriksen seems to slowly be getting back to his best as this season comes to a close. He played some exquisite passes in the second half and created chances for both Son and Moura.
Harry Kane - 6
Kane was having a good game prior to his injury and linked up with his attacking midfielders well. After a big clash with Fabian Delph he suffered yet another ankle injury. Only time will tell what this might mean for his season.
(SUB) Lucas Moura - 6
Replaced Kane after his injury and continued to caused City’s defence problems.
(SUB) Victor Wanyama - 6
The Kenyan came on to provide a little more stability to Spurs’ midfield and did so.
(SUB) Fernando Llorente - N/A
Only appeared for the final few minutes.
