Wanyama ‘not mentally well enough’

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman says Victor Wanyama is not ‘mentally well enough’ to play against Norwich on Sunday afternoon.

The Kenya international missed the side’s 1-0 defeat to FC Midtjylland on Thursday evening and has again been omitted from Koeman’s squad for the visit of The Canaries, as speculation over the midfier’s future continues.

When queried over Wanyamas’s absence on Sky Sports prior to kick-off, the Saints boss admitted that the wantaway midfielder was not in the right frame of mind to start the game.

“He is not mentally not physically well enough,” Koeman said. “I will talk more about this after the game.”

The scenario is developing eerily similarily to that of Saido Berahino at West Brom, after the attacker – who is also a Spurs target – missed two games last week because of interest from Mauricio Pochettino’s team.

Like Koeman, Baggies boss Tony Pulis has reiterated that his player is not for sale and has slammed the timing of the transfer window for casuing disruption to players that are subject of speculation.

“It’s ridicolous that we’re into the third week of the season and we’re still talking about players coming and going,” he said prior to last weekend’s Chelsea defeat.

“All this stuff disrputs everybody and you can’t concentrate on really getting someone down and working on something.”

Koeman’s Saints take on Norwich at 13:30 on Sunday afternoon.
