Tottenham Hotspur-target Victor Wanyama has been left out of Southampton’s squad for their match against FC Midtjylland.
Ronald Koeman’s team have travelled to Denmark ahead of the second leg of their crucial Europa League Play-Off tie on Thursday, but the Dutch boss will be without Wanyama due to “illness”.
“Victor has not travelled because of a stomach infection,” the Saints boss told a press conference on Wednesday afternoon.
The Kenyan’s omission comes just three days after he reportedly told club officials he wants to leave St. Mary’s and his absence echoes the final steps of wantaway England international Raheem Sterling prior to his switch from Liverpool to Manchester City.
Koeman did not comment on whether any approach had been made from Spurs – who are desperate for midfield reinforcements – but did say that he hoped the former Celtic man would be fit again for the weekend.
The 52-year-old said earlier in the week that Wanyama was ‘not for sale’ amidst interest from Spurs, but Mauricio Pochettino is unlikely to be undeterred in his efforts to sign the midfielder after these latest developments.
