Rulli Link Forces De Zerbi’s First Big Spurs Keeper Call

Tottenham Hotspur’s reported interest in Geronimo Rulli is not just another experienced-goalkeeper link. It cuts straight into the first real structural call of Roberto De Zerbi’s rebuild: how much trust does he need in the first pass before the rest of the system can breathe?

Get French Football News, citing TyC Sports, has reported that Boca Juniors have made Rulli their top goalkeeper target, while Tottenham could also move for the Marseille No.1. The same report places his valuation at around €9m, a manageable figure in a summer where Spurs are already trying to reshape the spine of the squad.

That is why this link matters. Spurs have already been active around the position, with Martin Dubravka’s arrival sharpening the pressure around Guglielmo Vicario’s future, while Antonin Kinsky’s new deal has raised a separate long-term succession question. Rulli would sit in a different category: older, cheaper, and already schooled in De Zerbi’s demands.

De Zerbi’s Build-Up Demands Change The Goalkeeper Calculation

De Zerbi has been unusually clear about where Tottenham must improve. In his end-of-season interview with the club, the Italian pointed to the first 70 metres of the pitch, not just the final 30, as the area where Spurs need more control. For his football, that starts with the goalkeeper.

Rulli worked under De Zerbi at Marseille, so this is not a blind recruitment punt. It is a potential shortcut. A goalkeeper who already understands when to pause, when to provoke pressure and when to punch a line-breaking pass can compress the adaptation period for the rest of the back line.

The statistical case is not spectacular, but it is credible. The 34-year-old was reported by The 4th Official to have conceded 52 goals and kept nine clean sheets in 39 Marseille appearances last season. Those numbers do not scream elite upgrade. They do, however, describe a regular starter in a high-pressure environment who has handled De Zerbi’s risk-heavy structure before.

The Kinsky Question Makes Rulli More Complicated

The danger for Tottenham is not the fee. It is the squad message.

Kinsky’s contract situation had already positioned him as a serious part of the next phase, and his pathway has been framed internally as a De Zerbi No.1 gamble. Signing Rulli would not necessarily kill that plan, but it would change its tempo.

There is a sensible version of this: Rulli arrives as a specialist bridge, Dubravka supplies Premier League insurance, Kinsky keeps developing without being thrown into a volatile rebuild, and Vicario’s market is assessed without sentiment. That gives De Zerbi three different goalkeeper profiles rather than one uncertain hierarchy.

There is also a messy version. Too many senior goalkeepers can blur roles, restrict minutes and make Tottenham look reactive in a position where authority matters. A build-up side needs clarity from its goalkeeper, but the goalkeeper group needs clarity from the club first.

A Cheap Deal Would Still Carry A Big Strategic Signal

The wider context is an aggressive Tottenham summer. The Times has reported that Spurs have already made four signings and are trying to move early for major targets, including midfield reinforcements. Against that spending backdrop, a €9m goalkeeper would look like a small deal on the balance sheet.

Strategically, it would be bigger than that. It would show De Zerbi is not only asking Tottenham for headline signings, but for players who can translate his ideas quickly on the training pitch.

Rulli is not the glamorous part of the rebuild. He is the kind of signing that tells you how the rebuild is supposed to work. If Tottenham follow through, the message will be clear: De Zerbi wants control before reputation, fluency before resale value, and a goalkeeper who can make his first pass feel like the first instruction of the attack.
