Xavi Simons breaks silence after Tottenham injury blow is confirmed

At a glance:

  • Xavi Simons out for the season
  • He won’t play in the World Cup either
  • Third ACL injury for Tottenham this season

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Xavi Simons has confirmed that he will be out for the remainder of the season. He added that he won’t feature for the Netherlands at the 2026 FIFA World Cup either.

Simons suffered a knee injury in Spurs’ 1-0 win over Wolves in the Premier League on Saturday, April 25. He went down after jarring his knee without any contact. He was then stretchered off, as he appeared to be in terrible pain.

Simons pens heartbreaking message after injury

Simons helped Tottenham to a 2-2 draw against Brighton last week. He then helped them register their first Premier League win of 2026, as they beat Wolves 1-0.

However, it came at a major cost, as he suffered a terrible injury.

On Sunday, the 23-year-old deleted all his posts on Instagram and shared a new post. He confirmed his injury and wrote:

“They say life can be cruel and today it feels that way. My season has come to an abrupt end and I’m just trying to process it.

“Honestly, I’m heartbroken. None of it makes sense. All l’ve wanted to do is fight for my team and now the ability to do that has been snatched away from me… along with the World Cup. Representing my country this summer…just gone.”

The midfielder added that it will take time for him to come to “peace” with it. However, he asserted that he will continue to fight “guided by faith, with strength, with resilience, and with belief”.

This marks the third ACL injury Tottenham’s men’s team has suffered this season.

James Maddison suffered one in pre-season, while Wilson Odobert is also out for the season after he went down in February.

Simons’ injury is a massive blow for Tottenham

Spurs signed Simons from RB Leipzig last summer. While he has struggled a bit to adjust to the Premier League, the midfielder has often shown signs of brilliance and creativity. Thomas Frank didn’t utilize him well, making it tougher for him to contribute.

However, it appears that Tottenham finally have a manager who believes in attacking and highly technical players in Roberto De Zerbi.

Hence, the timing of Simons’ injury is even more terrible. Moreover, Spurs are already without Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski, Odobert, and Mohammed Kudus. Hence, they have no creative options at all.

Simons scored five goals and provided six assists in 41 games across competitions for Spurs. Moreover, Dominic Solanke also went down with an injury against Wolves.

Tottenham will now have to find other ways to create and score in their remaining four games of the season. They desperately need to win at least two games, if not more, to have a chance of avoiding relegation.
