At a glance:
- Tottenham’s Xavi Simons suffers ACL injury
- The midfielder went down against Wolves
- Simons will also miss the World Cup
Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Xavi Simons will miss the remainder of the season due to an ACL injury.
The Dutch midfielder suffered the injury in Spurs’ 1-0 win over Wolves at the Molineux on April 25. He will also miss the FIFA World Cup this summer with the Netherlands.
It is a huge blow for Tottenham, who will be without any creative midfielders for their remaining four games this season. While James Maddison has featured on the bench in the last two games, it appears unlikely he will be able to start a game this season.
Tottenham medical staff’s ridiculous decision after Xavi Simons’ injury
The north London side faced a terrible injury crisis last season and have landed in the same situation again.
They have suffered five ACL injuries since 2023, with Dejan Kulusevski also suffering another long-term injury. Hence, Tottenham’s medical staff has come under immense scrutiny.
Against Wolves, Simons went down in pain at around the hour mark. He jarred his knee without any contact and appeared to be in immense pain. Spurs’ medical staff immediately went on the pitch to treat him. However, what they did after that was shocking.
The medical staff tried to assess Simons, who was clearly struggling with his knee. The midfielder was then seen hopping up and down a few times. He also tried to run it off on the sidelines. However, understandably so, he went down again and had to be stretchered off.
Former Tottenham midfielder Jamie O’Hara shared a post on X about it that read:
“Simons does his knee and the medical staff allow him to try and play on couldn’t write it”

This isn’t the first time this has happened with the Spurs medical staff, either. In February last year, they also made Radu Dragusin hop on the sidelines after he suffered a knee injury, which was later revealed to be an ACL tear.
Roberto De Zerbi hinted at Mohammed Kudus being rushed
In another indictment of the Tottenham medical staff, Roberto De Zerbi hinted that Mohammed Kudus might have been rushed from his injury.
The Ghanaian attacker suffered a hamstring injury in January. He returned to training earlier this month, but then suffered a setback, keeping him out for the season.
Ahead of the Wolves clash, De Zerbi was asked about Maddison’s fitness update. He told journalist George Sessions:
“I don’t know yet. I don’t want to push too much because we lost Kudus in this way.”
This appears to suggest that Kudus suffered a setback because he was being rushed from his injury. It turned out to be a huge blow for Spurs, as they now just have three fit attackers, depending on Dominic Solanke’s fitness.

Regardless of what happens in the relegation battle, Tottenham certainly need a major inquest into the medical staff. Their sheer incompetence cannot be allowed to continue for another season.
