At a glance:
- Tottenham scouts spotted in Belo Horizonte
- Cruzeiro the team in focus
- Kaiki and Fabricio Bruno watched
The upcoming summer transfer window could be one of the most important periods in Tottenham’s recent history.
Roberto De Zerbi has been given a larger influence in terms of squad planning, with the Italian tasked with making the club a force to be reckoned with again.
Recently, their transfers have been a mixed bag, to say the least, which has seen the club drop to the relegation zone.
Playing in the Championship is something they’ll be eager to avoid as it could take a hit on their finances and future transfers, among other things.
However, that hasn’t stopped Tottenham officials from jetting across the world to search for rough diamonds.
Tottenham scout watches Cruzeiro in action
Over the years, a handful of young players have been drafted into the Premier League directly, with varying degrees of success.
Tottenham signed Souza from Santos in January and the youngster has already shown flashes of brilliance.
And now, it appears as if they are set to repeat that trick.
According to Brazilian publication Central Datoca, a Tottenham scout watched Cruzeiro’s 2-0 win against Gremio in Belo Horizonte.
It is unclear who they watched, in particular, but the Brazilian newspaper mention Kaiki, who was recently called up by Carlo Ancelotti to represent Brazil.
Aside from the left-back, Fabricio Bruno is another player who could have caught Tottenham’s eye, with the defender also the subject of interest from Juventus.
Tottenham need ready-made players
It’s hard to fault Tottenham’s strategy as they are trying to unearth a rough diamond or two, which could work out well if they drop down to the Championship.
However, to become a competitive force again, De Zerbi needs ready-made players who can come straight into the team and win games for Tottenham.
The current squad is clearly talented, but the players are desperately devoid of character and confidence as they continue to falter in the Premier League.
That said, one win is all they need to get their mojo back, which they’ll aim to get against Wolves this weekend.
Brazil is an incredible production line for footballers and we’ve also seen flashes of brilliance from Souza. If they are trying to repeat that trick, they’ll need to do it knowing full well that such players need time to get to grips with the English game.
