Match preview: Leicester vs Tottenham

Leicester host Tottenham for the third meeting between the two in the space of 10 days.

This time, the FA Cup is on the agenda, as a last-gasp Harry Kane penalty in the original tie secured a replay for Tottenham away to the King Power Stadium, to take on a formidable Leicester team who will look to continue their unbeaten run against Tottenham this season.

The Foxes beat Spurs 1-0 last Wednesday in the Premier League and will look to make it two victories in seven days to progress to the next round of the FA Cup to stand a shot of silverware.

With Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez hoping to outgun Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen, Wednesday’s replay has the makings of another good cup tie.

The last meeting between the two saw a late Robert Huth header snatch all three points from White Hart Lane.

But similar efficiency was not matched against Aston Villa, who Leicester should have killed off in the first half were it not for Mahrez’ awfully lazy penalty.

That’s two missed penalties for the Algerian in a row now and his end product has dried up with no goals or assists in his last five matches.

Similar form has also deserted Premier League top scorer Vardy with no goals in the same number of games as Mahrez.

It seems that Leicester are on a bit of a shaky streak, with just one victory in their last five, courtesy of beating Tottenham in the league.

That doesn’t mean Leicester are beatable, last tasting defeat on Boxing Day against Liverpool meaning they are on a five-match unbeaten run.

Having lacked the goalscoring touch recently, they did stick two past Spurs in North London and looked like they were set for passage to the fourth round.

However, they will come up against a Tottenham side smarting at the way they lost to The Foxes and will expect a tough response, which Kasper Schmeichel can be more than equal to.

Tottenham

Spurs’ response since that defeat to Leicester last week was an emphatic 4-1 victory over a hapless Sunderland side.

Guilty of not being clinical against Leicester when they were on top, in both matches at White Hart Lane, they turned on the style on Saturday, scoring four times in a match for the fifth time this season.

Christian Eriksen, whose form has been poor of late, scored two superb goals, to take his tally to three goals in his last two games.

It’s a welcome return to form for the Dane who needs to produce moments of brilliance more to unlock those stubborn defences.

Mousa Dembele returned to the starting line-up and showed why he’s integral to Spurs with a commanding performance and goal.

The Belgian needs to be at his best when up against the hard-working and impressive Daniel Drinkwater and N’Golo Kante, who will look to pressurise and close down the former Fulham man.

With the pace of Vardy and trickery of Shinji Okazaki and Mahrez causing Spurs problems in their last meetings, the defence needs to switch on and silence those three who are Leicester’s big threats going forward.

Last time out

13th January 2016 – Tottenham 0-1 Leicester

The Leicester view: Claudio Ranieri, manager

“We are disappointed [with the draw to Aston Villa] and now I want us to show our strength in the next match.

“I’m not so pleased because we wanted three points. All my players wanted three points.

“It’s okay, the league carries on and we must concentrate now for the next match in the cup.” (FourFourTwo)

The Tottenham view: Dele Alli, midfielder

“It was a good all-round performance [the win over Sunderland] and thankfully we picked ourselves up after the defeat against Leicester.

“We did the same when we lost against Newcastle, it was important we bounced back and went on a run and we’ll look to do the same again, keep winning and go on another good run.” (FourFourTwo)

Prediction

This wouldn’t surprise me if this would be the third draw out of four between the two this season.

What will happen in extra time? Who knows.

Leicester 1-1 Tottenham (in normal time)
