The hunt for a striker: Where does it stand?

As is expected of this time of year, speculation has been rife surrounding new faces that may be coming to White Hart Lane.

In particular, a number of attacking faces have been linked with a move to North London, but as of yet, Mauricio Pochettino is yet to commit himself to any of a number of targets.

With just under three weeks till the transfer window closes, Ashley Thornton-Jones takes a look at the strikers who are continuing to be be linked with a move and the rumors surrounding their potential switches.

FC Metz v Olympique Lyonnais - Ligue 1

Clinton Njie

The Lyon striker looks most likely to be next in the door at White Hart Lane, and a deal could be done as soon as this weekend. The French club’s president has already confirmed that the switch is close, but they want to bring in their own reinforcements before letting the 21-year-old reside to North London. It remains to be seen whether Njie is Pochettino’s answer to the club’s attacking problems, but with just seven goals in three years, the pacey Cameroonian is more likely to adopt a role as super-sub rather than become a permanent fixture alongside Kane.

West Bromwich Albion v Manchester City - Premier League

Saido Berahino

It looked like a deal to take the 20-year-old to North London was as good as done just weeks ago, but negotiations stalled when Tony Pulis demanded double what Spurs were prepared to offer. Since then, nothing has really been heard of in terms of the move becoming alive again, and it seems in this instance, the two clubs are probably too far apart in terms of the striker’s valuation for talks to begin once more. Berahino was said to have his heart set on a move to White Hart Lane when talks of a transfer were prominent, however, so this could be one to keep an eye on for the rest of the month if the attacker remains focused on a transfer from The Hawthorns.

Charlton Athletic v Queens Park Rangers - Sky Bet Championship

Charlie Austin

QPR’s main man scored 18 Premier League goals last season, so it seemed inevitable that the attacker would find his way back to the top tier of English football. There has been no takers for the 26-year-old as of yet however, but if Spurs want Austin, they should be able to get their man despite interest from West Ham, Everton and Newcastle to name a few. Daniel Levy holds strong ties with the R’s whose Director of Football is Les Ferdinand, whilst former Tottenham coach Chris Ramsey is now manager. The doubt, once more, remains surrounding the amount of money that Pochettino is willing to part with to get his man, although £15m doesn’t seem too steep for a player that has been clinical at every level he’s played at. The Argentinian will have to move quickly if he is to bring Austin to the lane, as the latest news coming from White City seems to be that the attacker could be set to renew his contract if there is no bids in the coming weeks.

Celta Vigo v Real Madrid CF - La Liga

Javier Hernandez

Any potential move for the Mexican would’ve most likely have been scuppered by the injury picked up at the Gold Cup, yet rumors still persist over a potential switch to White Hart Lane. Now back in training, a move for ‘Chicharito’ looks as likely as it ever has been, but Daniel Levy could struggle to do business with Manchester United because of his stubborn stance over their approaches to take Harry Kane to Old Trafford. The attacker remains out of favour in the North-West despite the departures of Radamel Falcao and Robin van Persie, however, so United boss Louis van Gaal may decide to swallow his pride and cash in on the 27-year-old before his value decreases even further on the bench.
