U21s suffer unlucky opening day in France

Tottenham U21s were held in both of their opening Group A games in the first day of the National Under-21 Tournament in Ploufragan.

Ugo Ehiogu’s side were held 0-0 by youngsters from Ligue One side Stade Rennais in their opening game of the competition, before losing out 6-5 in a penalty shoot-out.

In their second-game, Ismail Azzaoui rescued a 1-1 draw against SM Caen but the young Spurs were again unfortunate as they lost out 9-8 on penalties.

Guingamp will be the opposition for tomorrow’s final group game, with Ehiogu’s side needing a win to stand any chance of making the Semi-Finals.

Irregardless of the group’s final standings, Spurs will be play at least one game on Sunday against a team from Group B.

Potential opponents include fellow Premier League side West Brom, aswell as Anderlecht, Marseille and Lorient.

Last year, Spurs finished bottom of their group then lost 2-0 to Auxerre on the Sunday in the seventh/eighth place play-off match.
