# Tottenham star wants out as Premier League club step up transfer talks

**Kevin Danso could be heading towards a late Tottenham Hotspur exit after Sunderland reopened talks over a permanent move for the defender.**

The Black Cats had already seen a loan proposal rejected by Spurs, but have now returned to the negotiating table with discussions centred around signing Danso permanently.

[BBC Sport, via Yahoo Sports](https://ca.sports.yahoo.com/news/sunderland-reopen-talks-tottenham-danso-180141365.html) reports that club-to-club talks are progressing, although Tottenham and Sunderland have not yet reached an agreement.

Personal terms are also not expected to cause a problem should the clubs settle on a fee.

## Sunderland step up Kevin Danso pursuit

The latest development comes after [Roberto De Zerbi](https://readtottenham.com/tag/roberto-de-zerbi/) confirmed that Danso has asked to leave Tottenham.

As [ReadTottenham reported on Sunday](https://readtottenham.com/2026/08/30/seven-tottenham-players-could-leave-transfer-deadline/), the Austrian approached De Zerbi to make his desire for a move clear after slipping down the defensive pecking order.

Sunderland subsequently made their move.

[Sky Sports](https://www.skysports.com/football/live-blog/11695/13375102/sunderland-transfer-news-rumours-and-gossip-live-updates-and-latest-on-deals-signings-loans-and-contracts) previously reported that Tottenham rejected an initial loan offer for the centre-back.

The newly-promoted side have now changed their approach and opened discussions over a permanent deal.

Tottenham’s position remains significant.

BBC Sport reports that Spurs are likely to want a replacement before sanctioning Danso’s departure, with De Zerbi seeking a defender who already has Premier League experience.

Danso originally joined Tottenham from Lens in January 2025 before the transfer became permanent later that year for £20.9million.

The 27-year-old now appears increasingly likely to leave north London if Sunderland can find an agreement with Spurs before the transfer deadline.
