# ESPN confirm Tottenham have verbal agreement to complete £35m transfer

**Tottenham Hotspur take on Chelsea later today in Sydney and such a high-profile clash in pre-season has grabbed much of everyone’s attention recently.**

However, there has been a massive development on the transfer front as a drawn-out saga appears to be headed towards its climax.

[Cristian Romero has been heavily linked with a move to Inter Milan](https://readtottenham.com/2026/07/31/tottenham-transfer-news-late-cristian-romero-hijack-inter-barcelona-atletico-madrid/), Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, among others.

Earlier this week, [Roberto De Zerbi confirmed that Romero asked to leave Tottenham](https://readtottenham.com/2026/07/30/de-zerbi-confirms-romero-vicario-will-leave-tottenham/), so it’s in the best interests of all parties involved to shake hands and part ways.

And now, ESPN Argentina have confirmed that a deal is close to being completed.

## Tottenham and Inter reach verbal agreement for Romero

The likes of Jan Paul van Hecke and Marcos Senesi have already been drafted in to replace the Tottenham captain, so the Lilywhites are well covered at the heart of the backline.

According to the aforementioned report, both clubs have reached a verbal agreement for Romero’s transfer for a fee believed to be in the region of £35m.

And while that doesn’t seem like a big enough fee for a player of Romero’s calibre, a few factors have seemingly gone against Tottenham in this transfer.

The Argentine has wanted to move on for a while now and publicly spoke against the club’s hierarchy last season. Additionally, he had his fair share of fitness issues and always fared better for the national team, which irked the Lilywhites faithful.

That said, Romero will always be remembered for wearing his heart on his sleeve and that night in Bilbao when Tottenham won the UEFA Europa League. In fact, he was fantastic for Ange Postecoglou during that whole run, which will hopefully be his legacy at the club.

As for Tottenham, the earlier they get this deal over the line, the sooner they can move on to recruiting attacking players, as they are currently focusing on trimming the squad.
