# ‘Situation is clear’ – Roberto De Zerbi sends stern transfer message to Tottenham midfielder

**Roberto De Zerbi has been speaking to the media after Tottenham Hotspur got the better of Sydney FC 4-2 on penalties.**

The game finished 1-1, after which the contest was decided on spot-kicks. Mathys Tel’s stunning free-kick was the highlight of the game for Tottenham, while Andy Robertson’s debut was also another talking point.

After the game, the Italian was quizzed about Lucas Bergvall, who started the game in midfield alongside Archie Gray.

The Swedish midfielder has been linked with a transfer in recent weeks, but De Zerbi has signaled his desire to keep him at the club.

## De Zerbi wants Bergvall to stay at Tottenham

[Bergvall has been heavily linked with Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United](https://readtottenham.com/2026/07/19/tottenham-hold-firm-as-newcastle-cool-46m-bergvall-chase/), with Tottenham swiftly knocking back approaches for him so far.

While De Zerbi wants the young midfielder to stay, he added that he won’t go out of his way to convince him – or anyone else – to remain at the club.

“The situation is clear, he wants space and to play in a double pivot but I cannot give a guarantee to any player that he can play.

“He was right that he wants to play as a central midfielder. I would like he stays, but if he doesn’t want I can do nothing.

“He will then have to speak to Vinai or Johan. He has to have the right spirit to stay.”

Bergvall blew hot and cold last season, but during his debut campaign at the club under Ange Postecoglou, he was undoubtedly Tottenham’s best player.

His talent is unquestionable and De Zerbi wants to keep him, so hopefully that’s the end of the saga unless he really pushes for a transfer.
