# Tottenham should let Eric Dier leave this summer

Eric Dier’s football career peaked when he [squeezed a penalty](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/av/football/44702122) past David Ospina – to send England through to the quarter-finals of the [World Cup](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/av/football/44702122).

Ever since then his career has fallen off a cliff – with a [dramatic loss](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-6966667/Eric-Dier-disastrous-2019-blighted-illness-injury.html) of form last season and a lot of [Spurs fans](https://www.90min.com/posts/6172267-tottenham-fans-slate-midfielder-s-performance-against-liverpool-as-spurs-lose-again) turning against the former Sporting Lisbon man.

Dier was once considered one of the [brightest prospects](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/everton/8272833/Everton-sign-Sporting-Lisbon-youngster-Eric-Dier-on-loan-as-England-close-in-on-his-services.html) in European football, but now he is only seen as a decent Premier League player – a backup centre-back and midfielder.

The 25-year-old is [very versatile](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/eric-dier/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/175722) – and perhaps it is this versatility that has stagnated his career – moving from [position to position](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/eric-dier/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/175722) and not finding the time to perfect one role in the team.

This can be seen in the number of games Dier has played at [centre-back](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/eric-dier/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/175722) and in[midfield](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/eric-dier/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/175722).

At the moment Dier is Tottenham’s fifth choice [centre-back](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/tottenham-hotspur/startseite/verein/148) and is behind [Tanguy Ndombele](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/tottenham-hotspur/startseite/verein/148), [Moussa Sissoko](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/tottenham-hotspur/startseite/verein/148) and [Harry Winks](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/tottenham-hotspur/startseite/verein/148) for a place in midfield.

It, therefore, seems unlikely that Dier will get much game time this year – last season he only made[28 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/eric-dier/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/175722) for Spurs compared [with 182](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/eric-dier/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/175722) in the four years prior.

Tottenham are still looking [to add players](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2019/07/31/tottenham-see-no-need-change-mauricio-pochettinos-job-title/) to Mauricio Pochettino’s squad, but they could do without Dier – the only problem they will have is finding any takers for a player who is woefully [out-of-form](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-6966667/Eric-Dier-disastrous-2019-blighted-illness-injury.html) and looks [slow and sluggish](https://www.footballwhispers.com/blog/eric-dier-gives-spurs-a-defensive-dilemma) on the ball.

Back in 2017 Manchester United supposedly [offered £50m](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2017/jul/11/manchester-united-eric-dier-tottenham-new-bid) for Dier but Spurs turned it down – now they will be looking to get around [£36m for him](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/eric-dier/profil/spieler/175722).

Spurs have just [four days left](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/48965845) to try and offload Dier – if they can their squad will be much better off without him.
