# Jan Vertonghen expecting one-year contract extension

Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen has revealed that he is expecting the north London club to trigger a one-year extension clause in his contract, according to a report on the [Evening Standard](https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/jan-vertonghen-expects-tottenham-to-trigger-contract-extension-a3928281.html).

The Belgian defender’s current deal expires at the end of this season but he is confident that the club will extend his stay by an extra year.

Vertonghen has become one of the club’s most important players over the years and Spurs will not want to lose him on a free transfer at the end of the campaign.

The 31-year-old also played a key part for Belgium as they finished in third place at the World Cup in Russia during the summer.

When speaking about his current situation, Vertonghen said:

> My contract is expiring at the end of the season, but Tottenham have an option to extend it with one year.

> I think they will take up the option. We’ll see what happens.

The centre-back has developed a healthy partnership at the back with Davinson Sanchez and compatriot Toby Alderweireld, with Mauricio Pochettino not looking to lose one of his key players.
